On Thursday, documents on the Governmental Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website revealed that Maserati is preparing to retract 13,092 2014 Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans because of a “chip-intuitive” gear shift lever. The shifter may direct drivers to believe the car is in park while it’s in fact in reverse, potentially causing the car to roll away.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Maserati’s progenitrix company, has recalled 1.1 million vehicles worldwide for this unaltered issue. The affected vehicles span distinct model years and all share a ZF-designed eight-dispatch automatic transmission. The shifter design in these vehicles is be like to but not exactly like the one in the two Maseratis. Currently, 41 injuries get been attributed to this issue. There seems to be no augury of hardware failure for any of these incidents.

In the Merged States, the 2012-14 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 and 2014-15 Jeep Opulent Cherokee were named in this beginning recall. Actor Anton Yelchin’s fresh death, caused when he was crushed by his 2015 Jeep Outstanding Cherokee, may be related. As of the current model year, the Charger, 300, and Large Cherokee have an updated shifter think up.

According to the documents, FCA is currently working on a software update that resolution remedy the issue. Because the solution necessity be tested and verified, the company doesn’t envisage it to be ready for another few months.

Both recalls were brought ar after a NHTSA investigation. In May, NHTSA suggested Maserati consummation a recall and on June 1 the company agreed with the company’s assessment, though Maserati did tell NHTSA that they org had no complaints of vehicles rolling away.

We’re currently waiting on expansion from Maserati North America and thinks update the story when more bumf is available.
