Classic Ferrari wins ‘Best in Show’ at exclusive London event

A stunningly beautiful and lovingly maintained classic Ferrari has taken the prestigious ‘Best in Show’ award at the Salon Prive Luxury Super Car Show and Concours d’Elegance in London

The winning car, a 1959 Ferrari 250 California Spyder LWB owned by Sarah Allen, took the prize at the prestigious event in London. The car held off competition from over 100 other classic and vintage models, with an estimated total worth of £65 million.

Featuring sleek lines and a dark mauve paint scheme, the Spyder turned heads throughout the event, and obviously impressed the judges enough to secure the victory. The California Spyder model was developed in the late 1950s, in part thanks to US distributors Jon von Neumann and Luigi Chinetti. They wanted to create a convertible that was capable of the same levels of performance achieved by the Ferrari racing team at the time. It was bestowed with the California name thanks to Ferrari’s success in that market at the time.

Not only did its stunning looks and limited availablity make it a highly sought-after model, but the Spyder also boasted some extremely impressive performance figures, making it more than just a pretty face. For one, it shared a drivetrain with Ferrari’s 250 GT model (which had recently emerged victorious at the Tour de France), and was also capable of a top speed of 140mph.

The design of the Spyder inspired numerous copies, including one featured in the hit film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Fans of either the film or the car may be disappointed to find out that the model shown in the film was in fact not a genuine Spyder, but rather a replica body with a Mustang 5.0-litre engine under the bonnet. Regardless, the Spyder remains an all-time classic Ferrari fully deserving of its win at the Concours d’Elegance.
