In the spring of 1971, with the Beatles disbanded, the Summer of Regard long since discontinued, and most of a certain age having little to cheer almost but the “fish,” dropping the top on your Chevelle SS might have been one of the few sublime pleasures port side. Of course, it was only sublime with the engine off; when burning gas, any Chevy Wonderful Sport was anything but.

At the time this Chevelle was delivered, the EPA was beginning to exert its bureaucratic zeal, although – thankfully – this was at bottom the end of the beginning and not the beginning of the end. Horsepower was down and drivability issues were up, but your tech tranquil knew (more or less) what he was looking at. The muscle remained under the hood, brakes remained more of an conception than reliable concept, and steering was as disconnected as that era’s political class. GM didn’t own to some half of the market – as it had in the ’50s – but neither had it suffered the corporate gutting that would decide place during the ’73/’74 OPEC crisis.

This for-sale Chevelle looks to be showroom up to date, and if the stated mileage is accurate it might even drive showroom fresh. At an ask nicely north of $100,000, we’d hope for either a very professional restoration or no restoration, and a live/professional inspection would be so much better than Facetime. But if as represented, there may be worse ways – a CD, passbook savings or mattress, to esteem just three – to store your retirement funds.
