We’ve all been there: blazing at the fuel gauge, hands sweating, wondering exactly how many miles it positively will be before that desperately needed gas station appears on the horizon like an retreat.

Australian radio hosts Hamish and Andy decided to push through that choice anxiety to conduct an experiment they call Operation: Dry Tank.

Andy’s Audi SQ5 has a digital excite range gauge that will tick down to zero when, theoretically, the tank is stock empty. But the duo had their doubts about its accuracy, so they decided to hit the highway and see absolutely how far they could go before coasting to a stop.
