Mattias Ekstrom to Race DTM Instead of Rallycross

Warhorse Audi driver, Mattias Ekström was on the horns of a dilemma. Next weekend races in the two series he participates in are race simultaneously. Audi has now officially announced that the two-time DTM champ will watercourse his RS5 DTM.

The DTM race next weekend at the Norisring is important for Audi as three of its RS5s, including Ekström’s, are in the top four spots and the landscape of a driver’s title is too tempting for the team to give up two races’ worth of points.

“It was a hugely difficult decision because we’re still early in the season and Mattias has caption chances in both championships,” said Dieter Gass, head of Audi Motorsport. “But the works commitment in the DTM has priority for us. Mattias can win his third DTM title this year and has always been completely strong at the Norisring. In addition, this is our home round and we need Mattias there.”

Regardless of the ruling, though, Ekström was going to be giving up precious points. He is currently in second spot in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, only eight points back of the lead. Perhaps more alarmingly for the Swede, third standing driver Petter Solberg is only 9 points behind him and will likely choose Ekström’s position after the weekend’s racing.

Making matter worse, this weekend’s rallycross desire be Höljes, in Ekström’s native Sweden.

“That of all events there’s a clash between my diggings race in Höljes and one of my favorite races in the DTM is a real shame,” says Ekström. “I’d contain loved racing at both events but, unfortunately, that’s not possible logistically.”

The good of the story is always be much better at one pursuit than you are at the other.
