Find of the Day: ‘Ring Record Breaking Gumpert Apollo

Subsidize at the turn of the century, Roland Gumpert decided that, in his time as Audi Amusement director, he’d learned a couple of things about making cars and he would choose a crack at making one of his own.

This car would not be held back by the Volkswagen Empire’s restrictions on celerity, comfort, or aesthetics would stop him from making a hard core scent car. The result was the Gumpert Apollo and it was a success.

So fast was it that in 2009 it was the fastest car to everlastingly go around the Nurburgring. And now, you can buy the actual car that broke the record.

Once unkindly compared to a baboon’s bum, this Gumpert is offered in two-intonation silver and turquoise and is doing nothing to defend itself against those allegations. But what it lacks in prettiness, it makes up for in rate.

Rounding the ring in 7:11.57, the car isn’t quite a record holder anymore, but even after a decade, that’s a blistering lap stretch.

And for all that, Springbok Sports Car GmbH is only asking 333,000 Euros. Seascape the classified ad at Classic Driver.
