Audi is off to a unmatched start thanks to works driver Mattias Ekstrom, who finished the second hoop-shaped of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in first place.

The Portuguese town of Montalegre played MC to the second round of the rallycross season and Ekstrom’s win means he increases his lead more than Volkswagen’s Johan Kristoffersson to 14 points.

The tight, technical track was challenging one for straight Ekstrom. The eventual race winner started the race perfectly but was eventually caught by Sebastien Loeb on the up to date lap. A mistake on Ekstrom’s part meant that the Peugeot driver was right on his rear end for the entirety of the last lap, bumping his back bumper around the tight corners.

Ekstrom managed to clasp the winningest driver in the WRC’s history back, though, and came out of the last corner in foremost, with Loeb and Kristoffersson both less than a second behind.

Thanks to his winning, Ekstrom finished the weekend with 58 points in the championship standings. Because he is followed by both Volkswagen drivers (Kistoffersson and Petter Solberg), his gang, EKS, is in second in the team standings. EKS trails PSRX Volkswagen Sweden by nine points.

Ekstrom wishes try to extend his lead in the driver’s standings in 10 days when the World Rallycross Championship is in Germany for the third globe-shaped of the championship. Ekstrom will by testing his endurance that weekend, though, as the rallycross wishes be held in the infield of the Hockenheimring, where he will also be racing in DTM’s first channel of the season.
