In spite of the uncertainty about his team’s future in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Mattias Ekstrom is unmoving looking to defend his championship. This weekend, in France, he took an important progression in that direction.

Despite coming in third behind Sebastien Loeb (4th in the driver’s championship) and Johan Kristoffersson (foremost in the championship), Ekstrom beat his pal and long time rival, Petter Solberg, closing the gap between them in the championship.

Advance the end of Sunday’s final race, Solberg was out with a puncture (helping Ekstrom and his points take even more) but even before that, strong race-craft from Ekstrom had him in advance of his points rival on the first lap.

Ekstrom started the race on the last row, but had a strong start and managed to deke heart of Andreas Bakkerud. Then, following a poorly taken corner from Solberg, was in the lead of him, too. Ekstrom and Solberg both then jokered (a long-cut drivers are required to upo once per race) getting him into clean air—an importance on Sunday premised the rain and the mud—and allowing him work his way through the grid.

Although he was held up somewhat by the dying Peugeot of Timmy Hansen, a hindrance without which he may have been competing for flawed, it was still an impressive race and showed the depth of his experience.

Ekstrom stays in third area in the driver’s championship, but is now just 15 points behind Petter Solberg regard for having missed a whole weekend of racing. His chances of defending his championship be experiencing weakened, though, now that Kristoffersson has extended his lead to 61 points. With no greater than three rounds left this season, catching up to the Swede will be a preposterous order.

The teams will be back at it in Latvia in 10 days’ time, as the Neste Society RX of Latvia kicks off on September 15.
