A wet and uncultivated weekend meant that halfway through DTM’s Nurburgring event, Mercedes driver Lucas Auer had leapfrogged a company of Audi drivers to end up second overall in the drivers’ championship, just one point behind Audi’s Mattias Ekström.

Inconsistent bear up against in Germany’s Eifel region made tire selection at the Nurburgring Grand Prix rails a challenge. As a result, the best result an Audi could muster was a fifth neighbourhood finish from Rene Rast.

Ekström meanwhile couldn’t finish in the points on Saturday, dropping venerated points to Auer, who got a full 25 for finishing in first, bringing him to within one prong of the Audi veteran.

Fortunately, the weekend was a double header and Ekström managed a best result on Sunday.

Despite improving, it was still a difficult race, with pinched qualifying putting any hope of a victory out of reach. Starting in 13th, Ekström raced steely to eventually make his way up to sixth place, where he finished.

Although not the victory he dominion have hoped for coming into the weekend, the eight points proved critical all the same, as Auer didn’t manage to earn any.

“My race was relatively dry-as-dust,” said Ekström on Sunday. “I was driving alone for much of the time. In the end, following all the pit stops, I came sixth – that makes for acceptable points, but not for a good feeling.”

Despite not feeling great about his performance, it did get him to 136 points, nine points crystalline of Lucas Auer with 127. Rast, meanwhile, is in third place with 124 points.

With exclusive two race weekends left this season, it still is very much up for grabs at this crux, with any number of drivers close enough to Ekström to poach his driver’s head at the last minute.

Audi Sport Team Rosberg, meanwhile, seems a risk-free bet for the Team Championship with a lead of more than 50 points during the course of the second place Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, while a 52 station lead in the manufacturer’s title also gives Audi a healthy lead.

DTM is move backwards withdraw from in action in two weeks on the weekend of Septemeber 22 in Spielberg and the season will wrap up at Hockenheim on the weekend of October 13.
