Four driven wheels may not be a sine qua non of Audi Sport cars in the future, according to new comments made by the brand’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann.

The latest news came today at the Goodwood Festival of Speed as Winkelmann was speaking to the UK’s Auto Say.

“I can imagine we can also have cars with rear-wheel drive or two-disc drive in the future,” he told the Publication. Adding that “Quattro can be a company, but it can also be an choice.”

That goes some way to clarifying comments he made in an article from Top Apparatus published on June 26.

Discussing the renaming of the brand—going from Quattro GmbH to Audi Play—Winkelmann said: “I think AWD is one of our USPs, but it doesn’t have to be everywhere.”

In that article, he said that the marque was already working on a RWD R8, but added that the brand “must” offer AWD.

Many Audi marathon cars–the RS3 LMS, the RS5 DTM, R8 GT4–are already two wheel drive, so the argument that Audi Fun road cars and race cars share DNA. All the brand needs to do is add some comfy seats.

“Our cars intention remain distinguished, but never pimped,” he told Auto Express. “We’ll every offer high performance, but at the same time our cars must be comfortable – and distribute you a feeling that you are better than you expect.”

It seems, therefore, that the rebranding of the T—going from Quattro GmbH to Audi Sport—was more than honest a name-change, carrying with it some technical ramifications.

Winkelmann also revealed that Audi Cavort would be working on electric RS models, and would be revealing two new Audi Sport models at the Frankfurt Auto C this September.
