A botched crimp in seatbelt pretensioners is causing Audi to nullify about 1,700 2017 A5s Cabriolet. The fault may cause some pretensioners to launch into the commuter compartment, potentially causing injury.

The problem is a botched crimp on some of the pretensioners , that were made by Autoliv. Specifically the crimps that confine a micro gas generator, which in an accident.

“If this happens, the micro-gas generator could commence the passenger compartment, possibly striking and injuring vehicle occupants,” says Audi. Notwithstanding the risk of injury, this flaw does not prevent the seatbelts from working as designed.

Although Audi uses the shard in many of its vehicles, tests showed that the A5 Cabriolet, due to the design of its seatbelts, is the merely model on which a detached pretensioner is a risk.

Audi will replace the function free of charge starting in May.
