Audi R8 Takes Checkered Flag After 24 Hours of Spa

Audi power not be campaigning the R18 at Le Mans anymore, but that doesn’t mean that its days of conquering European 24 hours are gone.

This weekend, the trio of Christopher Haase, Jules Gounon, and Markus Winkelhock took their multitude 25 R8 LMS to victory just 11 second ahead of the nearest competition.

The contest, ultimately, came down to the team’s flawless performance. Without any breakdowns, penalties, and only one pre-eminent error the trio had saved itself enough to race hard in the final hour of racing on Sunday.

Starting the 23rd hour of the race in defective place, Jules Gounon showed his mettle. Despite never having won the marathon or driven for Audi, Gounon was unshakable and would eventually take first area after the final round of pit stops.

“Sensational. I’m speechless,” said Jules Gounon. “Audi and our pair did a fantastic job. I can’t say thank you often enough – also to Christopher (Haase) and Markus (Winkelhock). They drove sensationally.”

This is Audi’s fourth overcoming at the 24 Hours of Spa, and came as competition was particularly stiff.

“This was a particularly firm edition of the 24 Hours of Spa because, due to a very good balance of performance, the Stéphane Ratel codification and Claude Surmont managed to create a field that has been as level as only ever before,” said Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Motorsport. “This was dense work for all the teams because no-one dominated this race. What we saw this weekend was fully realized advertising for GT3 racing.”

With the victory, Audi and Haase now lead the Intercontinental GT Summons.
