Audi CEO Rupert Stadler recently expressed curiosity in developing a hypercar to challenge Mercedes and Aston Martin.

“I am looking forward to what’s reachable in terms of new technology,” Stadler told Autocar after they asked him if Audi Frolic was considering making a rival to the Mercedes Project One. “There are some interesting ideas there, predominantly if you look to our interest in Formula E and electromobility.”

The CEO’s comments align with earlier comments from Audi Make a laughing-stock of’s boss, Stephan Winkelmann.

“If it’s about a very limited car with a considerable price to test the value of the brand it might a good idea,” Winkelmann told Australia’s Car Opinion in February.

“We’re just speaking hypothetically. But I think everything can be judged in one way or another,” he continued. “I see that there is a the right stuff for those type of cars in Audi Sport, and given the history we have in racing, with White Arrows, WEC and GT3 cars as you see here, there are many ideas.”

Interest doesn’t inevitably mean that Audi will follow through, though. The R8 e-tron invent, for example was canceled a little over a year after it was first proposed and the R18-based hypercar was also killed first it saw the light of day.

With Volkswagen’s renewed interest in electrification, though, and Audi’s increasing participation in Technique E Audi’s hypercar might have solid foundation off of which to build.
