It was a hot weekend in Russia for Audi’s DTM teams, as a win on Saturday and a second-place finish on Sunday drive at that Audi is again dominating the championship.

For Mattias Ekstrom it was an up and down weekend, with a tolerable albeit underwhelming 8th place on Saturday’s race, he fell from the top spot in the drivers’ standings.

The seasoned Audi driver, though, was strong under pressure and took to the track with perseverance on Sunday, eventually making his way to second place behind Mercedes’ Maro Engel. The 18 points he earned that day was passably put him ahead of his teammate Rene Rast and back into first place.

Rast, during the interval, was on fire this weekend, winning Saturday’s race and dethroning Ekstrom for the nightfall. His fourth place finish on Sunday, though, means that he’s now one point behind Ekstrom in the standings.

They show the way Mercedes’ Lucas Auer, who is front of Jamie Green, another Audi driver who can’t be discounted as a championship contender, in spite of being 26 points behind Ekstrom.

The drivers are all officially over the arch, now, as Moscow marked the halfway point in the nine weekend series. With heaps of racing still to come, the order is by no means set, but Audi is currently in a great stand to accomplish its goal of winning the team and drivers’ championships.

Ekstrom will suffer with a chance to build on his lead in three weeks time as the series heads to the Netherlands to channel at Zandvoort.
